What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file placed at the root of a website (example.com/llms.txt). It gives large language models and AI assistants a short, curated summary of the site and links to the pages that matter most. The format was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org and a growing number of companies publish one.
Think of it as a sitemap written for AI: instead of listing every URL, it explains what the site is and points to the best sources.
The llms.txt format
- An H1 title with the name of the site or project (required).
- A blockquote with a one or two sentence summary.
- Optional paragraphs with extra details.
- Sections with H2 headings, each one containing a list of Markdown links with optional descriptions.
- An optional section called Optional for secondary links that can be skipped when context is short.

Does llms.txt help SEO?
