Google first showed Universal Cart at I/O in May 2026. On October 15, it started rolling it out in the United States, and in the following days shoppers began seeing a cart icon and “Add to cart” buttons directly in Google results. For online stores, it means part of the shopping journey now happens before the visit to the site.
What Universal Cart does
- One cart for many stores. Shoppers can save products from different retailers in a single cart in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app. Items saved in one place stay in the cart.
- Price and stock alerts. The cart watches saved items for price drops and restocks, using Google’s Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion product listings.
- Card perks and promo codes. Built on Google Wallet, it takes card benefits into account and shows relevant promo codes.
- Two ways to buy. At participating stores, shoppers can pay with Google Pay inside the cart, or transfer the items to the store’s own cart and finish on its site.
Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants among the stores with checkout experiences. In both routes, the merchant remains the seller of record and handles confirmations and customer support.
How it works for merchants
- The UCP integration hub. Merchants that meet Google’s onboarding requirements choose a checkout option in the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration hub in Merchant Center. It is rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada planned for next year.
- Native checkout or cart transfer. Native checkout lets the purchase happen in Google. Cart transfer creates a cart on the merchant’s system through UCP’s Cart API.
- Transfer is one-way. In this first version, Google can create and hand over a cart, but it cannot update, delete or sync it afterward.
- Reporting. A UCP analytics dashboard follows the funnel from Buy button clicks to purchases and cancellations.
- Shopify. Direct Checkout is enabled by default for eligible US stores, under Sales channels, Agentic, in the Shopify admin.
Some promised pieces are missing for now: YouTube and Gmail are not part of the launch, and Google has not given dates for other countries.
What to check before the holidays
- Product data quality. The cart relies on price, availability and shipping data. Mismatches between your feed, your structured data and your page can cost you visibility or create bad experiences.
- Product structured data. Keep Product and Offer markup accurate and in sync with the page. Our Schema Generator helps you build it.
- Promotions. Promo codes and sale prices shown by Google should work on your checkout.
- Measurement. Some shoppers will arrive with a ready-made cart, or buy without seeing your product page. Expect fewer product page sessions for the same sales, and compare Merchant Center reports with your analytics.
- The bigger picture. Google is moving actions inside its own surfaces. Read about the Connected Apps Platform for the same trend outside shopping.
